Initiation of an Effective Vibration Analysis Program (cont.)
Begin Periodic Monitoring
After the measurement parameters are established, the increment of monitoring should be determined. The increment should allow a reasonable time for adjustment and repairs to be made to the machines. Often a period of every four to six weeks is recommended during the initial phase to develop a baseline trend. However, each machine may have different priorities. If it is felt that a machine should be monitored more than once per week, continuous monitoring with a hard-wired system should be considered.
Adjust the Increment of Monitoring
After major machinery problems are reduced or even eliminated, the vibration survey increment may be decreased for the machine. This change is primarily dependent upon priority of equipment. For example, a technician monitoring the "terrible twenty" machines in a plant significantly increases the reliability of half the machines. The remaining ten should maintain the increment of monitoring while the new ten can be added to the program. The ten that dropped off the list might then be monitored bi monthly or quarterly instead of monthly.
