Initiation of an Effective Vibration Analysis Program

The support of management is the core of any effective program and so it is with vibration analysis. If the workers are not available to provide corrective action there will be little benefit in starting a program. There are three significant dollar amount that can convince management that additional measures are necessary.

1. Cost of downtime from failures.
2. Cost of additional damage from simple components.
3. Cost of preventative tear-downs on equipment found to have nothing wrong.

These figures should be from the last few years. If the dollar amount does not exceed the cost of test equipment and additional personnel, consider using a consultant since they tend to be more cost effective. (Yes I am biased in this area)

This information, along with the importance of the work, should be presented in an educational format. The purpose is to educate management of the advantages vibration analysis. Unless they understand it, they won't support it.
