Initiation of an Effective Vibration Analysis Program (cont.)

Assignment of Program Coordinator

This person is often the central figure of the program. This person must be technically proficient in many aspects of predictive maintenance and possess a personality that conforms to the organization. The reason so many consultant firms exist is that many in-plant predictive maintenance personnel rapidly advance through the ranks of companies and allow the technical aspect of quality programs to dwindle to outdated, ineffective beasts of burden. Then they call in the consultants, usually just before all interest is lost.

Establish a Manual of Procedures and Instructions

This should be the first task of the program coordinator. This may contain several references (hopefully this will be among them) and should include enough information to allow anyone to jump in where the last coordinator left off. In addition the following should be included: description and objective of program; organization and responsibilities; classification of equipment; criteria for measurement parameters and setting alarm levels; data acquisition techniques; procedures for interaction with maintenance; procedures for calibration and maintenance of equipment; machine records; and case histories on each machine.
