Initiation of an Effective Vibration Analysis Program (cont.)

Classification of Equipment

Since most plants have hundreds, sometimes thousands, of pieces of machinery there is a need establish the priority of each piece as well as the maintenance procedures each piece requires. The most useful system I have discovered to establish these priorities is by developing a ranking index based on the machine importance and the work to be done. Each piece of equipment is given a numeric rank, which is recorded on the machine data sheet, then as problems are detected the procedures are ranked by job classifications. By multiplying the two values a numeric rating is generated. The higher the number, the higher the priority the work is given. The most important equipment, carrying the highest rank, is the best place to start vibration monitoring. This equipment is highly visible and has the greatest impact on the bottom line.
