Initiation of an Effective Vibration Analysis Program (cont.)

Analyzing Problems

If trending indicates a change in vibration, it becomes necessary to determine the source of change. If the change is an increase in amplitude the cause must be pin pointed as accurately as possible and a plan of action should be determined (correction or further investigation). If the measurement parameters were not correctly planned it will be apparent at this point and analysis will be difficult.

If the change is a decrease in amplitude and was caused by operational adjustments, mentioning this to the supervisor of the responsible parties is a nice way of saying "thanks" for a good job.

Recommendations

After a problem is located the maintenance or operational personnel responsible should be notified. Many plants have an existing preventative maintenance system in which planned maintenance can be scheduled or work orders can be generated. A clear, concise statement explaining what is anticipated in correcting the problem should be attached the work order.

For problems with a high priority, shutdowns or operating restrictions should be coordinated with the appropriate personnel. Tagging the machine and the controls is the best deterrent against accidental or unauthorized operation which may damage equipment or harm personnel.
